Math
Information
Students will need tools to measure the perimeter of the graveyard.
Students will use calculators for conversions. They will use graph paper to plot the exterior of the graveyard and tombstones Students will need to bring materials from home (of their choice) to recreate a scaled model of the cemetery. They should use various household items as symbols of actual tombstones, etc. |
Activity
While at the cemetery, each group (4 students per team) will divide the graveyard into 4 quadrants and then measure their respective quadrant.
Students need to record the measurements of the perimeter, as well as the distance between standing tombstones. (Students will not be required to measure sunken or turned over graves as many of them are difficult to find). (Depending on the amount of time students have at the graveyard, they could also measure the dimensions of the tombstones and include this in the final project). In the classroom, they will use graph paper to create a scaled down version of the cemetery by converting measurements to inches and plotting the site of tombstones accordingly. Students will use materials collected from home to recreate a scaled modeled of the graveyard. |
